Mosaics of Memory
“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer.
It sings because it has a song.”
-Maya Angelou
Every person in Kańczuga has their personal story of World War II, the German occupation, and the reverberations of those events through the decades. Each memory serves as a tiny painted stone that, when gathered with others, paints the picture of a painful history that shaped all of us.
Through the Mosaics of Memory quilt, we hope to knit together the diverse experiences of all in Kańczuga who faced World War II and its ensuing impact: those who perished, those who remained, those who risked their lives, and their families. We invite everyone to create a quilt square that speaks to your experience and tells your story. With these individual squares, we will craft a quilt to display in Kańczuga and survivor communities for reflection and observance.
By remembering our past, we can reconcile our present and build our future. We welcome your participation in Mosaics of Memory and look forward to seeing the layered, complex, and full picture it will create.
If you would like to contribute a 10.5x10.5 inch (27x27 cm) quilt square and tell us your connection and story about Kańczuga, please click the box below. We will send you instructions and next steps. If sewing and quilting are not your thing, but you would still like to take part, please also click the box below, and we can send you some options. We look forward to telling your stories.
